After the tow, choose the correct next step for your situation. If you are not putting the plate on another eligible vehicle, surrender or cancel it through the Louisiana OMV. If you are moving it to your next vehicle, follow the OMV transfer process. Do not cancel your insurance until you understand what proof your insurer or the state may require.
Keep the surrender receipt
Keep the OMV surrender, cancellation, or transfer receipt with your donation records. This receipt is your proof for cancelling the registration. It is also sometimes a prerequisite to cancelling Louisiana insurance without penalties or flags. Save a paper copy and a photo or scan. If your insurer asks for proof, send a copy and keep the original for your records.
File the transfer notice
Plate handling is separate from reporting that you no longer own the vehicle. After donation, file the notice of transfer or release of liability with the state. If the plate was left on
If the vehicle already left with the plate attached, act quickly. Call Crescent Wheels and ask whether the plate can be recovered before the vehicle moves farther through the donation process. If it cannot be recovered, contact the Louisiana OMV for the correct way to report or cancel the plate. Do not guess or wait for a bill, insurance notice, or registration issue.
