Cancel insurance only after the vehicle has been picked up and the title hand-off is complete. Never cancel before pickup. Until then, you may still legally own the car, and an uninsured loss could be your problem. Some states also penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered.
If Louisiana requires a plate return, registration cancellation, or similar step for your situation, handle that before canceling. If you are not sure, check with the Louisiana DMV first.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Make sure the vehicle has actually been picked up and the title was handed off as required. If pickup is still pending, keep the insurance active. Do not use the scheduled pickup time as your cancel date if the car is still in your possession. Your safest effective date is the date the pickup and title-transfer hand-off were completed.
Handle plates and registration first
Before calling your insurer, check whether your plate or registration record needs attention. State rules can require plate surrender, registration cancellation, or keeping coverage until a registration record is closed. If the rule is different based on plate type, registration status, or your facts, ask the motor vehicle office before you cancel. Do this step before ending coverage.
Call with the donation date
Call your insurance company after the pickup and title hand-off are complete. Tell them the vehicle was donated through Crescent Wheels. Give the donation date as the pickup and title-transfer date, not the day you first filled out a form. Ask the insurer to make that date the effective date for removing the vehicle or canceling coverage.
Remove or cancel coverage
If the vehicle was on a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only that donated vehicle. Keep the rest of the policy active for any cars you still own or drive. If this was your only car, ask to cancel the auto policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. If you plan to replace the car soon, ask about avoiding a continuous-coverage gap.
Request refund and confirmation
If you prepaid the premium, ask whether a prorated refund is owed from the effective cancellation or removal date. Refund timing and method depend on your policy terms and billing status. Before you hang up, ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, the effective date, the policy change, and any refund or balance due. Keep it with your donation paperwork.
Keep these records together
Put your insurance confirmation in the same folder as your title records, pickup receipt, and any plate or registration paperwork. This helps if a bill, toll notice, parking issue, or insurance question comes up later in Greater New Orleans. Use the same donation date consistently: the date pickup and title hand-off were completed. If you still need the state ownership step, see our separate Release of Liability Guide.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance the morning of pickup?
No. Keep coverage active until the vehicle has been picked up and the title hand-off is complete. A scheduled pickup is not the same as a completed transfer. If something happens before the car leaves your possession, canceling early can leave you exposed.
What date should I give my insurer?
Use the pickup and title-transfer date as the effective date. Do not use the day you started the donation, the day you called, or the day you found your title unless that is also when the completed hand-off happened.
Will I get money back after canceling?
You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid for coverage beyond the effective date. The amount depends on your policy, billing status, and insurer rules. Ask for the refund calculation in writing, and keep the confirmation with your donation records.
What if this was not my only car?
Do not cancel the whole policy if you still have other vehicles on it. Ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle. Confirm the remaining vehicles, drivers, coverages, and payment amount before the call ends.
More donation prep guides
After your car is picked up and the title hand-off is complete, the order is simple: finish any plate or registration step, update the policy, request any prepaid premium refund, and save written proof. Crescent Wheels benefits Heritage for the Blind (EIN 58-2164446). If one detail is unclear, pause and confirm it before canceling.
