If your car’s registration has lapsed, you’re not stuck with it. In Greater New Orleans, you can still donate a vehicle with expired tags through Crescent Wheels. As long as you have a valid Louisiana title in your name, we can accept most cars, even if the plates are expired, it won’t pass inspection, or it hasn’t moved from your driveway in Gentilly, Algiers, or Metairie in months.
Here’s how it really works in Louisiana: for a donation, what matters is legal ownership on the title, not current registration stickers. You do not need to renew the registration or pay back fees before donating. Crescent Wheels arranges a free tow anywhere in Greater New Orleans, from the French Quarter and Mid-City to Gretna, Kenner, and Slidell. The tow company picks up your car, we process the paperwork so ownership transfers away from you, and the vehicle becomes the charity’s responsibility. You still receive a tax receipt, and proceeds support Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) helping people who are blind or visually impaired. After pickup, you’ll simply notify the Louisiana OMV of the transfer so you’re clear of future tickets or taxes tied to that car.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have the Louisiana title in your name
Find your vehicle title and make sure your name matches the current owner listed. It’s okay if the registration is expired or the inspection sticker is out of date. The title is what Crescent Wheels needs to transfer ownership legally in Louisiana, whether you’re in Lakeview, the Bywater, or across the river in Algiers.
2. Tell us about your car’s condition and expired tags
Call or submit our short online form and mention that the registration has lapsed or expired. Let us know if it runs, where it’s parked, and any issues like flat tires or a dead battery. This helps us schedule the right tow truck for your place in New Orleans East, Metairie, Kenner, or nearby suburbs.
3. Schedule your free pickup anywhere in Greater New Orleans
We arrange a towing time that works for you—daytime, evenings, or weekends in most areas. You don’t need to drive the car, renew the registration, or visit the OMV first. The tow company will come to your home, work, or storage lot in areas like the Garden District, Uptown, or Chalmette at no cost to you.
4. Sign the title and hand the keys to the driver
When the tow truck arrives, you’ll sign the title over following simple instructions we provide ahead of time. Then the driver loads the car, including vehicles with expired tags, no inspection, or non-working engines. Once it’s on the truck and the paperwork is signed, Crescent Wheels and Heritage for the Blind take over responsibility.
5. Receive your tax receipt and notify the Louisiana OMV
After the vehicle is processed, you’ll receive a tax receipt that you can use when filing your federal taxes. You may be able to claim at least a $500 deduction, with larger amounts using IRS Form 1098-C. Then you notify the Louisiana OMV of the transfer so you’re protected from future tickets, renewals, or property tax issues.
6. Enjoy the clear driveway and know you helped locally and beyond
Your expired-tag car is now gone, your title is out of your name, and you have documentation for your tax records. Meanwhile, Crescent Wheels turns your donation into funding that supports Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired, while you reclaim space at home in Greater New Orleans.
Potential complications to watch for
Title not in your name or signed over incorrectly
Tip: If the title is still in a previous owner’s name or was signed in the wrong place, the tow can be delayed. Before pickup, we’ll walk you through exactly where to sign and what the Louisiana OMV expects so the transfer is clean and you’re fully released from future liability.
Missing physical title, even though you’re the owner
Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but we still need a title. If you’ve lost it, you may have to request a duplicate from the Louisiana OMV. Contact us first; we can explain what information the OMV will ask for so you don’t make extra trips or fill out the wrong form.
Outstanding liens listed on the Louisiana title
Tip: If a bank or lender is still listed as lienholder, we may need a lien release letter or updated title before pickup. Check the front of your title for any lien notation. If you’re unsure, send us a photo of the title, and we’ll tell you what’s needed to clear it for donation.
Car stored in a tight or restricted-access spot
Tip: Vehicles squeezed behind other cars, in narrow French Quarter alleys, or in gated lots can delay towing. Tell us exactly where the car sits and any access limits. We’ll coordinate with the tow provider to bring the right truck or plan so they can safely remove the vehicle on the first visit.
